Standing at the threshold of the sea, feeling the waves kiss our toes; peaking at the top of the highest mountain, the world spread out before us; laying with our backs cold against the earth, gazing up into endless black. As we press into the edges of the earth, the expanse swallows us, the grandeur places us in the scope of our smallness. And that is where we rest. In being small.
Checking off to-do lists, solving first world problems, finding dominion in day to day tasks. These can lie and pad our hearts with a false sense of worth. Confidence quietly being built up in all the wrong places. Minds subtly swelling with a bigness that doesn't belong.
Then He whispers in the humility we lack. He sheds light on places disproportioned. The wise let go of the effort to be big in order to allow His enveloping love to keep us small. Because in being small we are given the capacity to see the grandness of God. And His grandness is where our hearts find home.
