They are only kids once and they've been asking for years. If we wait until we have more money, they will be grown. I don't want to have a newborn again, let's look at older ones. Do we really want to do this? We don't really need a pet. It isn't wise for us to spend money on a pet. A pet might be therapeutic for her. Every little boy needs a dog.
On and on the conversation went -- for years -- until finally...
A baby golden retriever found her way to our family. Not an older dog like mom hoped for, not a stuffed dog like our oldest hoped for, not as cuddly as dad hoped for, not as passive as the middle one hoped for and not as willing to leave his toys alone as our youngest hoped for...but still the perfect dog for our family. She's sweet as maple syrup!
That is, after all, her name -- Maple!
Whether in marriage, workforce, family or life in general, our expectations rarely match up to reality. But when we take what we have and make the best of it, we discover the beautiful gift of contentment! Our puppy reminded me of this!
Make the best of what's in front of you today! Maybe you'll discover you actually have a pretty sweet life!
